According to the cover only the duo of Tone and Thomas Strønen Åse, “VOXPHERIA” de facto emerged significantly in the trio with Strønens Humcrush-duopartner Ståle Storløkken who recorded, mixed and produced. To that extent, this is a very similar board as recently “Ha!” Of Humcrush and Sidsel Endresen. But there are similarities in spite of significant differences […]
“And what might tomorrow’s sound be, if you could hear it today? Enter a wormhole as you brave Norwegian Tone Åse’s new album Voxpheria (Gigafon), a semi-dissonant duo with percussionist Thomas Stronen. Åse is an unearthly, achingly soulful singer; the two improvise with raw, symbiotic melding of electronicized human and inanimate sound in expressive ‘singularity’. Åse […]
Four stars! Scandinavian duo: male drummer and female singer. Reminiscent of the Swedish husband and wife act Wildbirds and Peacedrums, then? Yes, occasionally: at moments, there´s a similar kind of skeletal Scandi soul. But at other moments, Voxpheria calls to mind Portishead and Susanna Wallumrød and Sidsel Endresen, but with a harder edge than any […]
“A beautiful and inventive achievement.”
In truth we wouldn´t want to do without anything on this album… because this is refreshing, new, vital music that in a unusually succesful way has taken charge of the electronics (and not the other way around)!
A new artistic breakthrough for Tone Åse.
Pling Plong and backbeat have finally found eachother.
«From their own unique soundscape, Tone Åse and Thomas Strønen brings «Voxpheria», improvisation for voice and drums with lyrics by amongst others Rolf Jacobsen and E.E. Cummings. Is´t an album that doesn´t just invite to- but demands – full concentration from it´s listeners when the voice, partly manipulated, imparts lyrics and word-alike vocalsounds in […]
«Space Jazz» It could have been a new galaxy, but «Voxpheria» is introduced as the soundscape that´s created when the electro-acoustic improvisers Tone Åse and Thomas Strønen meet. Åse, who once co-founded Kvitretten, who is the leader in Trondheim Voices and has her own band Bol, has been an important voice in the field […]
This album perfectly exemplifies that it´s possible to make new soundscapes using traditional instruments like vocals and drums.
With Voxpheria, Tone Åse and Thomas Strønen have created quite an incredible piece of work. In turn spellbinding or disconcerting, accessible or challenging, it brings two incredibly talented and individual musicians. The result is, quite simply, breathtaking.
